Overall,
the arguments taken from the literature concerning the effect of engagement
lead us to think that serious games (SGs) might be powerful tools for learning.
However, there is a clear lack of empirical studies investigating the
effectiveness of SGs in learning. It will be necessary to conduct many more
experimental studies comparing the effect on learning of no training, pencil-and-paper
training, video game and SG training, before it is possible to claim that
SG-based training is effective. It will also be necessary to perform
longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effect of training using SGs. We
should avoid becoming overenthusiastic about the SGs that are currently
flooding the market until their effectiveness for learning has been
scientifically demonstrated. However, we also needs to stress the
beneficial aspects of the development of SGs, which could prove to be the
educational tools of the future.
