History of Taiwan’s animated movie
Taiwan’s first original animated movie was released in 1954. Twenty-four years later, Taiwanese James Wang founded a company named Wang Film Productions, also known as Cuckoos Nest Studios, and became a contract film maker for Hanna-Barbera and Walt Disney Cartoons. In the 1980s, Taiwan became Hollywood’s 2D production center and soon took the step into 3D fully-computerized animation. In 2007 American famed film producer George Lucas obtained a 43 percent stake in CGCG Inc., one of Taiwan’s leading 3D animation studios. The CGCG team did the post-production work for Star Wars: The Clone Wars was conceived by Lucas and screened worldwide in 2008. This proves that Taiwanese contract animated technology had won international animation makers’ admiration.
New soft power
"In the past, the importance of Taiwan’s ACG (Animation, comics and games) industries were undervalued, but these industries now have become an essential part of our country’s new soft power. Over the past decades, the governments of Japan and Korea have exported their animated films, comic books and game products to Asian and European markets. Retired French football player Zinedine Zidane and AS Roma’s captain Francesco Totti said that they got interested in soccer after reading Captain Tsubasa -- a Japanese comic book. Even women and children in the Middle East have heard of this manga, a term used outside Japan that refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan. Yu Wei-cheng, professor of Tainan National University of the Arts, believes that Taiwan has the potential for becoming the technology center of computer-generated imaging (CGI) in Asia because colleges and departments have CGI-related classes.
The ACG industries used to be under the supervision of the Industrial Development Bureau, the Ministry of Economic Affairs; the Film Division, the Government Information Office; and the Institute for Information Industry. "It is time for the CCA to integrate them into a single, complete policy,” Yu said. Fifty-one ACG-related firms established the Digital Content Derivatives Industry Alliance at the end of 2008. Li Yung-chin, Chairman of the alliance and Softstar Entertainment, a New Taipei City-based computer games and software company, said that setting up the alliance has helped enhance cooperation between enterprises and academia, but he urged central and local governments to adopt a holistic approach to promote the industries.

ReplyDeleteBut sometimes when i got bored and want to relax ,,,i just switch on to animated movies and programmes. Its really give me peace and feel relax after long hour of work
ACG industry has made great progress during the past decade. But the overall condition is not ideal with a good deal of problems in all respects. Particularly, the quality of products can not come up to expectations and still remain a certain distance from that of countries in the mainstream of ACG industry. One of the consequences resulted from the lagging behind of the development of ACG industry is the influence on the survival conditions of employees in ACG industry. Retribution of employees in ACG industry is not in proportion to their labor output and instability of jobs becomes normality. The decline of the whole industry also influences the anime education. Explorations of the talent cultivation mode that adapts better to the industry needs are in an urgent need. (Reference:Studies on living situations of people engaged in ACG industry )
ReplyDeleteIn contrast to Taiwan's industry, the merging of culture and creativity with digital technology has led to a renaissance in the animation, comic, game, and film industries. The Taiwan Film Culture Center
planned for the Xinzhuang New City Center will become a key resource for the development of the flm industry. In addition, construction of the Knowledge Industry
Park on the north side of the Xinzhuang New City Center will encourage the clustering and expansion of digital content companies. It will, at the same time, help turn New Taipei City into a virtual digital entertainment park. The Far Eastern Communications Park in Banqiao is also attracting the animation, comic, and game industries, thereby injecting new energy into the dynamic and innovative culture of New Taipei City.
